Severe drought in the Pantanal: thousands of animals are dying in the largest wetland in the world and no one talks about it

Pantanal in Brazil is experiencing the worst drought in the last 50 years and local associations are asking for help to save animals

The Pantanal, the largest wetland in the world (which is mostly found in Brazil), is experiencing a severe drought and local associations are asking for help, especially for animals that are dying more and more.

There is talk of the worst drought in the last 50 years in Pantanal. A situation that is putting this area at risk, which is so important for environmental balance and biodiversity, and already heavily tested by the devastating fires that hit it last year and which we told you about. A new cycle of fires has started again and, combined with drought, is putting a strain on the survival of the local fauna that can no longer find food and water. Recently, a peccary, a species of wild boar native to Latin America, was rescued by volunteers from the NGO Ampara Silvestre. He was standing in the middle of the road, in obvious distress and in shock.

And it is precisely the Brazilian NGO to sound the alarm on a situation out of control, in fact there is a lack of resources to be able to help animals. The costs of moving volunteers, medicines, supplies, food, water, access to the most inaccessible places with special cars, etc. they are very tall and that is why a fundraiser was born (which you can participate in HERE).

It must also be considered that the rehabilitation process of wild animals is long and requires specific treatments for each species. Once recovered, adult animals are reintroduced into the wild more quickly, while in the case of rescued orphaned puppies, after recovery, it takes an average of 2 years before being able to return to their habitat.

The Brazilian NGO has already saved over 400 animals from fires thanks to a team of 45 professionals, who have worked in different bases, carrying out activities for the recovery of injured or distressed specimens, surgical interventions, maintenance of fences, cleaning and distribution of water. They managed to distribute 288 tons of food and more than 7 million liters of water to the animals, and all this contributed to the survival of the local fauna.

But now the resources are running out and thousands of animals are in danger of dying without being able to count on this precious aid anymore!
