Sea monsters, for experts the frightening creatures are actually erect penises of whales

A singular theory that, according to a professor at the University of Derby, could be the explanation for the sightings of sea monsters that gave birth to the many legends still in circulation. This theory, however, does not hold true for the Loch Ness monster

When it comes to sea monsters, legends and mythical tales flock that storytellers and travelers from all over the world have told, celebrating the exploits of explorers in the most inaccessible seas inhabited by these mythological creatures.

Many of these legends are right up to us thanks to the sketches of travelers or explorers themselves who reported on paper what their eyes observed, certainly not being able to photograph it. And so drawings and representations of sea monsters with gigantic tentacles and very sharp teeth have arrived in every corner of the world, inspiring novels and short films.

According to Professor Michael Sweet, professor of biology at the University of Derby, however, what the sailors and commanders would have seen at sea would not really be some parts on the water surface of monstrous creatures that, from the abyss, were ready to emerge and swallow whole fleets, how much the penises of erect whales.

Sweet has in fact shared some photos of blue whales Balaenoptera musculus showing their penises that they can reach for this species i 3 meters long.

Back in day, travellers/explorers would draw what they saw. This is where many sea monster stories come from ie. tentacled and alienesque appendages emerging from the water – giving belief to something more sinister lurking beneath….however, many cases it was just whale dicks. pic.twitter.com/6ZH1nJZvB1

His explanation may seem unlikely, but the expert suggests that in fact many of the sinister sightings throughout history have only been close encounters with whales in a state of excitement.

To support his theory there are also previous scientific studies that have analyzed some famous cases of sea monsters such as the one encountered by the Scandinavian missionary Hans Egede who described the terrible creature as

a truly terrible marine animal, rising above the waters, whose head surmounted our mast. It had a long pointed snout, and it blew like a whale ”.

Thus we read in a research published in 2005 in the Archives of Natural History where it is Egede himself who compares that marine animal to a whale.

I used the image of Nessie only as an example of how people think sea monsters look like "

said Professor Sweet, underlining however that for the latter his theory is not applicable, being Nessi in the famous Loch Ness and not in the open sea.
