When Schildi turtle was found by her rescuers she was not well at all. The vet found that she had a severely infected leg and, to avoid death, he could do nothing but amputate it. How was Schildi going to lead a normal life after the operation? How would she have moved?
The answer to these questions came from a team of doctors from the Bird Consulting Practice in Baden, Germany, who created a special prosthesis using a piece of Lego. The idea came to Dr. Panagiotis Azmanis, who stole the wheel from the toy basket of a work colleague's daughter.
By equipping the turtle's body toy with veterinary glue, doctors tweaked the popular brick to find the right height, after determining that one wheel would work better than two. It had already happened for Chris, the disabled pig who today always walks thanks to a wheelchair made from children's toys. Schildi now is recovering in an animal recovery center and it is adapting perfectly to its new bionic paw.
“Turtles need to run free in the garden, they needed a prosthesis. We will see you again from time to time for the check-up. Should it have a 'flat tire' it will be easy to replace the wheel. It moves a lot so I expect to see it for a new wheel more or less once a year ", explains Panagiotis Azmanis.
