Sad record for Norway: hunters killed more whales this year than in the last 3 years

Norway has killed more whales this year than in the last 3 years, despite bans on commercial hunting.

The Animal Welfare Institute reported, based on statistics published by Fishermen's Sales Organization (Råfisklaget), that Norwegian hunters have killed more whales this year than in the last 3 years, well 481 units compared to 429 last year. And unfortunately the season is not over yet.

Most of the specimens killed are female, 70%, many pregnant, which is very serious because "it can have an impact on genetic diversity and slow population growth", as emphasized Kate O'Connell, consultant for marine animals at the 'Animal Welfare Institute (AWI).

And they were not the only victims of hunting because harpoons often hit other specimens as well, seriously injuring them.

The killings hit a grim record despite a noticeable drop in domestic whale meat sales, but Norway has focused on exports to the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Japan to remedy the problem.

Whaling has started again in Norway: the slaughter of 1278 specimens has been authorized

This is despite the fact that commercial whaling was banned by the IWC, the International Whaling Commission, through a 1982 moratorium valid worldwide.

Although many countries have accepted it, some, including Norway, have taken advantage of a clause in the ICRW, the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, which allows members to file an objection. In this way it can continue undisturbed to violate the moratorium.

But AWI and other organizations have decided to oppose the country's decision to prevent the whaling fleet from expanding further.
