A rarity, very difficult to observe. A albino magpie was spotted inside a wildlife sanctuary in Tasmania. Its white feathers and the characteristic red eye they left no room for doubt.

According to the park keepers, it is a very particular bird, decidedly sociable and inclined to accept food from the hands, despite being able to feed on its own.

Magpies like this are born one in a million. For this she amazed even more. The animal lives inside the Trowunna Wildlife Park. Director Darren Rumble has explained:

“He was found at the base of a tree with no possibility of returning to the nest. As soon as we rescued him, we knew we would take care of him for his entire life. If we had let him go, he wouldn't have survived more than a day ”.

Unfortunately, like others albino animalsbecome easier for predators to spot. In the case of the magpie, its white feathers would have attracted crows or other raptors right away.

Rare, or more common than we think?

The answer was Dr. Eric Woehler of BirdLife Tasmania Convenor according to whom it is impossible to say how rare an albino magpie is.

“We actually don't have reliable data on albinism in the bird population. We know it happens because we are receiving more and more reports ”.

It is certainly a widespread phenomenon in nature, we have seen it several times, but in the world of birds it is not frequent at all.
