Il quokka it is undoubtedly one of the most adorable marsupials of the great Australian continent. It was nicknamed thehappiest animal in the world in 2013, thanks to his docile temperament and his friendly and always 'smiling' expression. It is therefore not difficult to imagine how the latest hashtag craze on the Internet came about: the #QuokkaSelfie.

Self-portraits with the little animal gone viral on social media they were posted almost exclusively by tourists visiting Rottnest Island in Western Australia. This is where most Quokkas live. The quokka population, once very large, has now drastically reduced, mainly due to the arrival of the dingo, about 3.500 years ago, and the fox, brought by Europeans at the end of the 1800s.

The animal is currently referred to as "Vulnerable", according to the Red List of the endangered species of the IUCN. While taking a picture with these adorable creatures sounds irresistible, you also need to be aware that it is illegal to touch them in kind.

That's why the people in the photos have bizarre and twisted positions to shoot the now famous #Quokkaselfie, and often help themselves with special sticks to get the perfect shot without breaking the law.

I Quokka, for their part, they are extremely friendly, they are not afraid of human beings and they are always ready to get close. They are the real kings of selfies!
