Polar bears are increasingly undernourished, the white giants of the Arctic are in danger of disappearing forever

Polar bears are now in agony. More and more hungry and lacking in energy, they are even forced to cannibalism to survive

February 27 is the Day of the polar bears, but there is nothing to celebrate for the white giants of the Arctic. The climate crisis, in fact, is literally wiping them off the face of the Earth. These fascinating mammals are now forced to live in ever smaller areas.

Their habitat is changing too fast due to rising temperatures and according to a study conducted a couple of years ago by Polar Bear International, the polar bear population is set to collapse almost entirely by 2100. What if global warming were to continue at current rates, according to scientists, in 2035 the Arctic sea could run out of glaciers in the summer months. And this would represent the coup de grace for polar bears.

Polar bears are in agony, hunting for food even in landfills

Global warming is putting this species to the test. If until a few decades ago the white giants of the Arctic were still able to hunt seals (their favorite prey), in recent times they have begun to feed on bird eggs and go into areas populated by humans in search of food, as confirmed. from a study published in the Royal Society Open Science scientific journal.

Mitivok Island in Hudosn Bay (the vast inlet of the Arctic Ocean) has become a favorite destination for polar bears in recent years. The reason? Thousands of seabirds nest here, including eiders and sea ducks, which these animals have begun to eat.

But it doesn't stop there. Recently, researchers from the Polish Polar Station in Hornsund in northern Norway immortalized a polar bear catching and devouring a reindeer, a scene that has never been seen before. These specimens are not usual feeding on reindeer, but they are forced to change their "diet" and sometimes even go hunting for food in landfills.

In 2020, the video, shot in Siberia, which showed 10 polar bears attacking a garbage truck to look for something to eat, went around the world.

And unfortunately this is by no means an isolated case. Such episodes are becoming the custom. And among polar bears there are also more and more cases of cannibalism. A terrible drama for which man is responsible.
