Polar Bear Hotel inaugurated: in China there is controversy over the first hotel with polar bears in captivity

The first Polar Bear Hotel has opened in China, where guests can observe the polar bears locked up in the facility 24 hours a day.

The first was inaugurated in China Polar Bear Hotel. You got it right: a hotel that makes live polar bears its main attraction. The structure, which opened its doors last Friday, is located inside the theme park of Harbin Polarland, in Heilongjiang province.

The hotel managers offer visitors the opportunity to observe polar bears 24/24 from all 21 rooms.  “Whether you're eating, playing or sleeping, polar bears will keep you company,” reads Harbin Polarland's official WeChat account.

A real condemnation for the poor polar bears which, among other things, are an endangered species, increasingly reduced to the limit due to climate change and the consequent melting of glaciers. "Gaps in China's wildlife protection law allow companies to exploit animals without any concern for their welfare," a spokesperson for the China Animal Protection Network explained.

Since the inauguration of the Polar Bear Hotel on social networks, several shots of bears forced to survive in an artificial ice enclosure and small pools of water have been circulating, in a structure that some have called a "panoramic prison".

Yang Liu, spokesperson for Harbin Polarland, tried to justify himself by explaining that when temperatures allow, bears can also be outdoors. The inauguration of the first Polar Bear Hotel has sparked a wave of controversy from animal and environmental associations.

"Polar bears belong to the Arctic, not zoos or aquariums or hotels," said Jason Baker, senior vice president of the animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). "Polar bears are active for up to 18 hours a day in the wild, roaming geographic areas that can stretch for thousands of kilometers, where they enjoy a real life."

Unfortunately, however, for many people polar bears represent an attraction like many others. At the moment, in fact, all the rooms of the structure - which have a cost that varies from 243 to 295 euros - are all already booked.

It is truly distressing to think that while polar bears struggle for survival due to man-made consequences, there are those who lock them up in zoos or even hotels condemning them to a terrible existence.
