Peru, maxi seizure of sharks: an illegal cargo of 11 tons from Ecuador confiscated.

11 tons of sharks worth $ 60.000 were seized in Peru. The illegal cargo was discovered by the Environmental Prosecutor and the Ecaudor Police in Tumbes, a city on the border with Ecuador. Sharks, of several internationally protected species, came from this country.

The alert was given by the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat) of Ecuador. During the cargo inspection, it was noticed that the fins had already been removed. In fact, they are in great demand in the Asian market, where they are considered aphrodisiacs. And it is not the first time, unfortunately, that it happens! Shark fin smuggling is a thriving market.

Cathay Pacific will no longer carry shark fins on its aircraft

Now the Environmental Prosecutor of Tumbes will continue the investigations to punish those responsible for the crime. Meanwhile, the seized sharks will be donated to populations with limited resources, rather than thrown away.
