She took care of him until he fully recovered. If adopting a wounded animal is easy to imagine thinking about a dog or a cat, it is less so when you are faced with a spider. Not for Elina, an Australian girl who treated a large hunter spider that was missing six legs.

His story is going around the world and it is no coincidence that it has also earned him recognition from the Peta. It all begins when Elina Walsh who lives in Townsville, a coastal city in north-eastern Australia, encounters a 6-legged hunting spider. This species, especially the largest male specimens of Heteropoda maxima, reaches the length of the body with extended legs of as much as 30 cm.

This was not the case with the animal found by Elina, very thin and dying. So the girl decided to help him. After researching and learning that spiders can regrow legs, she spent some time caring for the great arachnid, which she named Peggy.

“I did a quick Google search and found that spiders can actually regrow legs, so I thought I'd give it a try,” he said. "I'm a huge animal lover, hunter spiders are not normally my favorite choice but I felt sorry for him and tried to help him."

After a month of treatment, Peggy recovered her strength and recovered her missing limbs. Peggy was also dehydrated and Elina was also able to "drink" him, using a wet cotton ball.

His gesture did not go unnoticed. Elina's loving care of her injured spider allowed her to win a prize. Out of her compassion for her, she was awarded the PETA “Hero to Animals” award.

“We take off our hats in front of this kind woman, who showed great care and respect for Peggy and went out of her way to save his life. Spiders are sentient beings with the will to live and they all deserve the same kindness and respect that Elina has shown towards Peggy. So next time you have an uninvited guest, like a spider or an insect, in your house, remember Peggy and ask yourself what Elina would do, ”Peta said.

Peggy has now almost fully recovered. Her new paws are even smaller than the others but she will soon be fine and she can go back hunting alone and Elina can free her.
