Thanks to his research and observation activities, he has now managed to identify new species by documenting them with photographs. He met the first peacock spider while walking in a national park north of Sydney and from then on his curiosity led him to new discoveries.
Otto Jurgen is co-author of a new paper dedicated to the identification of new species sighted in northern and eastern Australia that has just been published in the international journal Peckhamia.
According to the data he has available at the moment, they now exist 48 confirmed peacock spider species and identified in Australia, particularly Western Australia. However, they exist still numerous species waiting to be confirmed.
The peacock spider is between 3 and 5 millimeters in length. Its name derives from the bright colors that distinguish it. According to the researchers, the peacock spider's behavior is more like that of mammals than that of other spiders.
The colors of the peacock spider become part of the mating rituals and also its appearance does not inspire fear. According to the scientist who identified the new species, the peacock spiders they are similar to dogs and cats in their behavior and in the interaction with the environment.
To document the sightings of the peacock spider, the scientist has created a Facebook page where he collects the most beautiful photographs taken during research and observations, so even we who do not have the possibility to reach Australia at this moment can admire the images of this extraordinary arachnid.
