Don't call it just a bear or a rebel. M49, which has now become Papillon for everyone, has entered our hearts. His story is a symbol of a nature more and more subjugated by man who steals spaces, destroys habitat and feels threatened by an animal that basically has only one fault, that of being a bear. And in Trentino, they have always been there.
Yesterday we gave you yet another news of his capture. We are already at the third. Papillon was sedated, locked in the tube and taken back to the Casteller Center, where fences and detention were waiting for him. That enclosure from which he has already escaped twice, that 'concentration camp' that the big brown bear has to close. Because he dreams and wants freedom.
He wants to hunt, feed on what he finds, sleep under a tree. And he wants to do it without constraints, without uncomfortable presences, without anyone deciding for him what is right or wrong. The bear is fine, weighing 182 kilos, 40 less than a month and a half ago when the radio collar was removed.
His destiny is strange, with the presence of man always there, constant, cumbersome. Arrived from the beloved Slovenian forests that was still a puppy to restore the species in Trentino, now suddenly, according to President Fugatti, it is a danger to be solved as soon as possible and in a completely absurd way, which does not take into account animal welfare.

Can the life of a living being be put on the second floor with respect to tourism, business, the economy? The human being stands as a dominant race to the detriment, as always, of what surrounds us.
The bear is the bear and we cannot be indignant because it is rebellious, because it hunts, because it is hungry and tears the sheep to pieces. How can we expect it to conform (he like the rest of the animals) to our habits, our lifestyles, our equilibrium? Papillon must be accepted for what it is.
He is not a hero, he is just a bear and he becomes the unwitting spokesperson for all those animals who only want freedom.
