In fact, on November 24th the islanders heard four shots booming around the island and it is assumed that some mouflons have been killed, even if the president of the Park Authority Giampiero Sammuri has not confirmed how many mouflons have been killed since the November 22, he gave the order to hunters to shoot the mouflons. On the island of Giglio a real slaughter had been planned, which, however, was eventually stopped thanks to the intervention of biologists and various animal welfare associations, including LAV and WWF.

The story of Gigliola broke the hearts of many and the Tuscan Archipelago Park Authority also intervened on the question, clarifying its position:

With regard to the news that recently appeared in the press also with a video about the presence of a "baby mouflon" that would wander "alone crying for the promontory", the park points out the following. The operators who, on behalf of the park, are in charge of catching the mouflons on a daily basis, cover a large area of the island, also observing mouflons, mainly aggregated and in the last few days they have not seen any animals that match the characteristics of the one observed in the video. In any case, the Park, in agreement with the LAV, invites those who observe animals in difficulty to promptly report their position in order to take all the most suitable actions to ensure the necessary care. "

The fear for the fate of Gigliola and the other mouflons grows

Now, however, the animal rights activists and the inhabitants of the island are worried about the fate of Gigliola and the other specimens. Even if the puppy manages to make it through the winter, his life will still not be safe. Contrary to the statements made by some politicians and associations two weeks ago, only some mouflons will be pardoned as the slaughter has been temporarily suspended, but not definitively revoked.

As stated by the president of the Tuscan Archipelago Park Authority, Giampiero Sammuri in some recent interviews, the mouflons that the park will not be able to capture in the coming months will be inexorably killed by the end of 2023. Since the culls have been suspended ( November 30) only 6 mouflons, of the approximately 80 estimated by the park, were captured and taken elsewhere, including some females.

It is possible that among these there is the mother of little Gigliola, and that the moved group was her flock - underlines Massimo Vacchetta. - It is therefore imperative that Gigliola be secured and reunited with the 6 mouflons moved to the continent on Sunday. Even if there is no mother among them, at least Gigliola will be followed by a veterinarian and her life will be safe from killing when they start again. Translocations, although they may be considered better than killing, do not guarantee the welfare of the animals. The capture of some mouflons and not others can divide the flock and produce orphans, as could be the case with little Gigliola.

Our wish for little Gigliola is that she can be reunited with her parents as soon as possible, but above all that the lives of all the other mouflons be spared.
