Let's save the mountain gorilla in Africa. The plans to search for Petroleum of the British company Soco International threaten the last remaining African mountain gorillas. A major campaign has begun to stop exploration for black gold within Virunga National Park.

Virunga, founded in 1925, is Africa's oldest national park and is home to some of the last mountain gorillas in the world. Sir David Attenborough, naturalist and filmmaker, joined the campaign to remind you that the search for oil threatens the gorillas and the natural park, which was stated UNESCO heritage and who is the protagonist of a documentary released today, November 7, 2014, on Netfix.

The park represents the habitat of a number of species of birds and mammals absent in any other African national park. Both the park and its inhabitants are threatened by armed conflicts, poaching, and deforestation and exploration for oil and mineral resources.

According to Attenborough, parks such as Virunga have been designated a Unesco World Heritage Site because they represent sites of great scientific and natural value, not just for the nations they are in, but for the whole world. These areas, therefore, must be protected now and in the future.

It would be really worrying if the Virunga park were really exploited for oil extraction. This would pose a threat not only to the environment but also to the wild animals that inhabit the park. If a park of such high value cannot be protected from drilling, how can any other place be defended?

Now we expect to receive a serious response from Soco, a company listed on the London Stock Exchange, about its intentions to explore the park for oil. International judicial authorities should be involved in the affair. African mountain gorillas will be saved from aims of humanity's wealth?
