It is a massacre of swifts in Jesi, in the province of Ancona, where the poor birds have lost their lives and continue to do so on the roof of the church of S. Pietro Apostolo. It is massacre of swifts in Jesi, in the province of Ancona, where the poor birds have lost their lives and continue to do so on the roof of the church of S. Pietro Apostolo. In fact, the parish priest had the crevices of the tiles walled up, also having electrical anti-laying barriers installed. That's enough a literally electrocute animals.

There is controversy in Jesi where citizens are witnessing a real massacre of swifts. It all started last summer during the work to secure the church after the 2016 earthquake. Then the tiles on the church facade were bricked up.

This year, when the swifts are back they have not found their nests anymore and, even worse, in many cases they were electrocuted because of the electrical barriers installed specifically to keep them away.

In accordance to told by local media, close to the church facade, there are many dead swifts, some even entangled in electrical wires.

Following the whole story, from the beginning, was Catiuscia Di Bernardo, who lives opposite, and who for almost a year has been working to find a solution:

"I tried to involve everyone, Local and Provincial Police, the councilor for the environment, the municipal councilor Silvia Gregori, the project managers, Lipu, I was in the curia, at the Carabinieri Forestali, yesterday, in the San Marcello office, where I presented the case. And shortly after, the military arrived. I will write to the Mayor and if necessary I will reach Rome, to the other St. Peter's. Together with other animal lovers, one step at a time, we are trying to defend and protect these beautiful birds that protect urban biodiversity. I don't know if we will succeed, but let's not give up ”.

In recent days, the Forest Police have spent about an hour and a half in the church of San Pietro Apostolo to ascertain what is happening. The current amperage, in the case of pigeons, gives rise to a shock which is not fatal but which is fatal for the much smaller swifts.

Asked on Facebook, Lipu has explained and

“By law, electrostatic support bollards must be bloodless for both pigeons and other wild animals. Otherwise there may be a violation of the legislation on the protection of wildlife (law 157/92) and that against the mistreatment of animals. Usually these situations occur when the system is not installed in accordance with the law or there is a malfunction, so things that should be solved technically, as long as those who have the right to intervene. It is necessary to ask to intervene quickly and if there are problems the law to refer to is the one mentioned above ".

Norma Barbini, delegate of the Lipu of Ancona, sent a letter on the case to Striscia la Notizia, asking for "an adequate intervention" from the editorial staff.

    An unmotivated and cruel massacre.
