Lolita, renamed as the loneliest killer whale in the world, turns 50, but she lacks the most precious asset: freedom because she lives in a zoo

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Almost half a century in captivity. These days Lolita, renamed as the loneliest killer whale in the world, in fact, turns 50, but as some would say, there is nothing to celebrate, given that she lacks the most precious asset: freedom.

We had already talked about this beautiful orca. Alone in a tub, she revolves around all day like an automaton. Visibly stressed, probably in this period of lockdown, she has suffered further. A petition had been made for her to have her swim in a protected bay and make her forget her imprisonment forever. But the judges of the US Court of Appeals said no to her freeing her and she Lolita remained at the Miami Seaquarium, where she has been considered a tourist attraction for years.

In this video the protests for his release:

She had been captured in 1970 at Penn Cove off Whidbey Island, so from her sea she found herself in a puddle, between flashes, improbable little ball shows, ridden and tamed on command. After the death of her partner, Lolita was left alone and many of her fought for her. But nothing helped, not even the fact that the unfortunate orca was captured in an area that belongs to the Lummi tribe. According to a treaty of 1855, the natives have the right to protect everything that rises in their area, therefore also the sea and its inhabitants. They appealed to this hope, but the court eventually left it to the water zoo claiming that the managers respect it and guarantee its animal welfare.

We have been saying this for years, the only welfare for animals is to live free, in their natural habitat and according to the laws that regulate it. How do you think that an orca could be happy to be in a tub and to be photographed? Not to mention that Lolita had been snatched from her mother when she was just three years old and that her partner Hugo had committed suicide in 1980 by fighting her head against the tub. Now Lolita turns 50 alone and perhaps her only desire is that of freedom.
