It looks huge, but it's actually a little puppy in need of care. He is the sweetest walrus of 90 kilos found orphaned and alone on an ice sheet by a fisherman from Barrow, Alaska. He is now in a specialized center for the recovery and rehabilitation of wild animals and is doing well.

It was rescued, also thanks to the intervention of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), by the staff of the Department of Wildlife Management, in the territory of North Slope Borough. Once his condition was evaluated, already constantly monitored by a local veterinarian, the walrus was transported from Barrow to Anchorage in an aircraft of Northern Air Cargo (NAC). From here he then left by truck for the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, where he was rescued and treated.

Experts believe that the baby is between four and six weeks old: “he was moderately dehydrated - reads a note from the Center - and has been shown to have lice. The lice have been treated and should go away within a few days. It is estimated that he is 4-6 weeks old, too small to be without mum. In the wild, the walrus would have stayed with the mother for up to two years or more ”.

However, the orphan has already settled in and loves cuddles very much, company and good food, like all small mammals for that matter. The walrus, then, is a particularly social animal, accustomed to live in large herds which can be made up of thousands of individuals. Also for this reason the huge puppy does not like to be alone and cries when the staff members leave. However, he consoles himself by drinking titanic amounts of milk: one and a half liter bottle every three hours.
