Walk back and forth like an automaton in a small indoor cell at Japan's Nagano Chasuyama Zoo. This is the story of Fuko, the elephant left alone and far from her natural habitat.

Fuko is 39 years old and has lived alone in a cramped cage since 2008, since her life partner Dumbo died. For 25 years, the two elephants have been inseparable, but now Fuko experiences all the frustration of loneliness.

Elephants are social animals capable of feeling empathy, which is why the video shows all his malaise. Fuko walks in a nonsensical repetitive pattern in her enclosure: the movements denote an abnormal stereotypical behavior that is often typical of wild animals in captivity.

Life at the zoo comes with boredom, anxiety, frustration and depression. For some time, Fuko's biological, behavioral, and social have not been satisfied. To cope with her loneliness, she tries to interact with the zoo visitors by following them and reaching them with her trunk.

“Isolation is an undeserved punishment for an animal that is naturally highly intelligent and social. Elephants live to be 60-70 years old and are social, have families and friends. They feel pain in front of the disappearance of a similar one ”, says Elephants in Japan, the organization founded by Ulara Nakagawa and born after the death of Habako, a lonely elephant at the Inokashira Park Zoo.

Elephants in Japan is fighting to give a better life to Fuko and the other animals who live alone in Japan and which are estimated to be around a hundred.

"Fuko still has a chance for a better life: to experience soft ground under his feet, have company and occupy his time in a better way," reads the petition.
