The animals, some sick and visibly suffering, spent their days alone, in fences covered with excrement, among bowls of putrid and muddy water, absolutely undrinkable.
What was supposed to be a safe haven for animals to forget the mistreatment they had suffered in the past was actually a nightmare.
The dogs and other animals housed in the structure came in fact from situations of abuse and discomfort and were entrusted by the municipal bodies to the refuge, so that they could get back on their feet.
The two managers of the lager kennel, who moreover they also received financial donations to take care of the animals, have been entered in the register of suspects for keeping animals in conditions incompatible with their nature.
The two have admitted their responsibilities and are required to restore conditions suitable for the welfare of the animals.
That of lager kennels continues to represent a plague that affects our entire country, in particular the southern regions where it is more difficult to contain the phenomenon of stray dogs.
Ad welcome stray dogs they are mainly private structures with which local administrations enter into agreements, offering shelters from 2 to 7 euros for each animal hosted.
In absence of effective controls, the managers of private kennels aim only to accommodate the highest possible number of dogs, so as to receive greater contributions to the detriment of the conditions of well-being and health of the animals.
The dogs therefore end up herded in overcrowded and dirty facilities, where food and water are not sufficient and without being guaranteed the necessary veterinary care.
It is necessary that the administrations invest in municipal kennels and that they carry out effective controls in the private structures with which they enter into agreements. It is not acceptable to profit from the health and welfare of these innocent and defenseless animals.
