    The koala is a very quiet and sleepy marsupial that lives in the wild in the Australian eucalyptus forests, of whose leaves it is greedy. This funny mammal is, together with the kangaroo, one of the icons of Australia which, however, is a risk of extinction and this pushed the Morrison government to a record investment of $ 50 million to preserve koalas and their habitat over the next four years.

    Prime Minister Scott Morrison recently announced that Australia will allocate this huge amount to protect koala populations, the environment in which they live and at the same time finance the veterinary centers that care for hospitalized koalas as well as all initiatives aimed at safeguarding marsupials.

    We must work to protect koalas for generations to come

    Morrison said. The fund will be distributed as follows:

    • $ 20 million for habitat and species protection projects;
    • $ 10 million for local community-led initiatives;
    • $ 10 million to run the National Koala Monitoring Program;
    • $ 2 million for research on diseases affecting koalas and to develop a vaccine.

    The factors that threaten the species are in fact many. THE devastating fires of 2019 they have catastrophically reduced the number of koalas present in Australia which today is around 40.000, too few to guarantee the survival of the species. In addition, diseases such as chlamydia make koalas sterile and can cause their death with a succession of localized extinctions.

    The government, however, immediately took the situation in hand and with this latest large investment, more than 74 million dollars have been allocated for Australian koalas.
