After five weeks of patrolling between Australia and Antarctica, Sea Shepherd spotted one dead whale on the deck of one of the gods ships Japanese poachers present in the waters of Australian whale sanctuary.

This is the first sighting of one whale killed by poachers since the International Court of Justice banned whaling in Antarctica in 2014.

Japan is continuing to hunt whales under the pretext of scientific research about these animals. In reality it is only a way to mislead the ruling of the Court and to continue with the poaching.

One of Sea Shepherd's helicopters spotted the Japanese ship last Sunday. The poachers were quick to cover the whale and harpoons with tarpaulins.

According to Sea Shepherd, the whale hunters of the Nisshin Maru ship were caught red-handed trying to hide the evidence of what happened.

The Australian Federal Court is against whaling, which must be protected in the Sanctuary. Yet the Japanese do not give up poaching.

The killing of the whale would have taken place just as the Japanese prime minister was on an official visit to Australia.

According to Sea Shepherd the fact that the Japanese whalers attempted to hide the evidence of the killing of the whale puts them in a wrong position.

Whalers know they are going against the decisions of the International Court of Justice and the Australian Federal Court regarding the ban on whaling, yet they continue to act.

The hope is that the photographic evidence now obtained by Sea Shepherd can lead to an end to illegal whaling in Australia and elsewhere in the world.
