A new creature populates the skies of the world. A hitherto unknown species of bird was discovered by an ornithologist from Greenpeace Belgium, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Singapore and the Institute of Sciences of Indonesia.

The animal, sighted on the island of Rote, Indonesia, is the Rote myzomela (Myzomela irianawidodoae) and belongs to a colorful family of birds. Her name was chosen in honor of the First Lady of Indonesia, Iriana Joko Widodo.

The Rote myzomela feeds on nectar but its existence is at risk. The habitat of this new species is in fact shrinking visibly and for this reason it needs more protection.

Indonesian forests are constantly threatened by industrial and agricultural exploitation. The Rote Island itself where the colorful bird was discovered has to contend with deforestation.

“Indonesia has over 1.500 bird species and new species are discovered every year. Most of the birds have a characteristic song that distinguishes them, thanks to this identification was possible. It is a great satisfaction to have discovered this species. It doesn't happen every day! I hope the discovery will remind everyone how crucial the survival of these forests is not only for birds but also for tigers, orangutans and animal species still waiting to be discovered. Indonesian authorities should take note and step up efforts to protect forests, ”said Philippe Verbelen, Greenpeace campaigner and ornithologist.

Deforestation severely threatens Indonesian forests. In recent years it has emerged that many have been burned to make way for palm oil plantations.
