Incredible footage shows very rare live giant squid, brought ashore in Japan (which will now end up in an aquarium)

A very rare as well as unusual finding since molluscs of this size are not seen every day in Japan. However, it is not the first time that a giant squid has landed near a beach, the last sighting was in 2020 in South Africa

A few days ago along the coast of Ugu in the city of Obama, Japan, a giant squid was discovered by a local fisherman around 10 am. The specimen swam towards the beach, perhaps thinking it would go unnoticed, but this was impossible given that its size left everyone speechless.

Some experts from the Echizen Matsushima Aquarium arrived on the spot and measured the squid with considerable difficulty, as can be seen from the video shot by The Mainichi that broke the news and was shared a lot on social media.

According to reports from the Japanese broadcaster, the giant squid would be 3 meters long. The animal will now be transferred to the Echizen Matsushima Aquarium, located in Sakai which, although located in the same prefecture, is a good 2 hour drive from Obama.

For him, no more open sea and freedom, but a life before the eyes of the many visitors of the structure. The managers of the aquarium had in fact a great interest in grabbing the giant squid, being a very rare find of such a mammoth cephalopod still alive.

The giant squid Architeuthis is the largest mollusk in the world and can even reach 15 meters in length, lives in the depths of the oceans and is usually never seen along the coasts. If this happens, then the animal is very often on the verge of death.

The latest case of a beached giant squid dates back to 2020 when a cephalopod weighing over 300 kg reached South Africa. (Read also: Very rare 330 kg 4 meter giant squid found on a South African beach)
