In this palace they mercilessly destroyed the swallows' nests, nailing boards and nets to obstruct the passageways.

In a building in Busto Arstizio someone has seen fit to destroy some swallow's nests, also using boards and nets to obstruct the various passages and prevent the birds from building more nests.

The breeding season of the swallows has begun, but these birds have to deal with a great threat: the man, who often decides to destroy with extreme lightness to destroy their nests and send them away. The umpteenth case of cruelty, which is also a crime, inflicted on this species and beyond, dates back to a few days ago. To tell it is Angela, a citizen of Bust Arstizio, municipality of Varese, where someone has seen fit to destroy swallow's nests, also using boards and nets to obstruct the various passages and prevent the birds from nesting again.

"The attic of this building until a few days ago was inhabited by swallows and swallows, who brought spring especially with their garriti." - Explains the woman - Seeing them and hearing them was a joy: she made us think of the arrival of summer. Unfortunately, someone not accustomed to these presences, felt annoyed and decided to run for cover, making an unfortunate decision. I saw a van equipped with an articulated mechanical arm, which "climbed" up to the roof in the cabin that operated the arm, there was this sapiens, I can hardly call him a man, who destroyed nests and swallows with a tube: later, they nailed boards and nets to the beams to obstruct the various passages, preventing the swallows from rebuilding other nests ”.

Angela wanted to tell the episode, in the hope that acts of this type will no longer occur

"I hope that no more such episodes will happen" - he adds - "It is unacceptable that migratory birds do not have the right to nest, just because they annoy some little human being".

Destroying the nests is a crime!

Too often people destroy the bird nests that are found near their homes, accusing the birds of "dirtying", or because they carry out renovations of attics and facades of buildings. And this also happens during the nesting period, which means certain death for newborn birds.

It is good to remember that that swallows, swifts and house martins are species protected by law n. 157/92 and various other European directives, so it is strictly forbidden to destroy their nests. And as regards the renovation of facades and buildings, there are specific regulations establishing the ways in which to treat the possible presence of nests to preserve protected species.

For the uninitiated, these birds help us keep the growth of the fly and mosquito population in check. In fact, they feed on insects which they hunt while in flight. A pair of swallows can eat up to 6.000 insects per day in the breeding season. One more reason to protect them.

We too, in our own small way, can help swallows and other species during their nesting, building artificial nests that replace the original nest in case it has fallen or been destroyed.
