Northwest Regional Head of Tasmania's Parks and Wildlife Service Nic Deka said the rescue mission is underway, but it's really hard to gauge how many of the pilot whales have already died. The main pod is stuck about 100 meters from Macquarie Heads and there is another pod several hundred meters away. Personnel from the Department of Primary Industry, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE) and the Tasmanian police are on site and are handling the incident.
