A video shot by pure chance in Costa Rica immortalizes the birth of a sloth. A rare occurrence to see as this mammal is very private

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Have you ever seen the exceptional birth of a sloth? Certainly not! You now have the opportunity by watching a very rare video shot, by pure chance, by a tourist guide in Costa Rica.

Steven Vela is a tour guide who in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, was confronted with a more unique than rare situation. Right here he managed to immortalize a happy event: the birth of a sloth that, immediately after birth, dangles from a tree clinging to the umbilical cord that still binds it to its mother.

We would not expect it, given its proverbial phlegm but, in this situation, the mother of the slowest species in the world readily stretches her paw to retract to herself, embrace and clean the body of the newborn. An exciting moment that surprised and shocked those who watched it live.

The man said he shot the unusual and exciting video in a completely random way. He had seen from the car window that there was a sloth in a tree and had started to film it. However, he did not in the least expect what would happen shortly thereafter, namely that he would witness the birth.

Here is the video posted by the man on Facebook.

In a message to National Geographic Steven stated that:

“It was something extraordinary. I think I'll die and I'll never see something like this again "

Indeed, as Rebecca Cliffe, executive director of the Sloth Conservation Foundation, Costa Rica confirmed, attending the birth of a three-toed sloth it is quite rare as they are sedentary and spend most of their time hiding in the treetops.

    As he told National Geographic:

“I don't think [hanging from the umbilical cord] happens anyway. But I suspect it's quite common and doesn't really cause a problem. It just makes all the spectators a little nervous "
