Have you ever wondered why your dog forms a circle before breaking free from his poo? A new study published in the journal Frontiers in Zoology could definitely answer this curiosity. Demonstrate how a wide variety of dog breeds align their bodies with the Earth's magnetic field before pooping. Even the smallest and smallest fluctuations affect the position.

The researchers of the Czech University of Life Sciences di Praga they observed 1.893 droppings of 70 dogs belonging to 37 different breeds for a period of two years, thus discovering that the little dogs preferred to excrete feces only when their body was aligned along the north-south axis of the planet, with stable conditions of the magnetic field.

When the Earth's magnetic field was quite fluctuating, which occurs about 80 percent of the time, this directional behavior wears off and dogs position themselves regardless of alignment. "Alignment during ejection was evident under quiet magnetic field conditions, regardless of the time of day or month, ”the study authors write.

Scientists reached their conclusion by observing that in the morning, dogs tend to position their bodies towards the west, but they move eastward in the afternoon, which is related precisely to the fluctuations of the Earth's axis. By studying a variety of different breeds they were able to rule out the possibility that the positions were related to only a few species. They were also able to establish that this behavior does not depend on the time of day and, therefore, on the position of the sun, because the dogs have been observed for a number of seasons at different positions and times.

If theIt is still unclear why dogs behave this way, it should be noted that the natural oscillations of the earth's magnetic field disturb the orientation of birds, bees and whales. “In this study we provide the first clear and simply measurable evidence ofinfluence of geomagnetic field variations on mammalian behavior. Furthermore, it is the first demonstration of the effect of tilt shift, which to our knowledge has never been investigated before ", conclude the authors.
