Horror in Bangladesh: they celebrate the killing of a leopard cat at risk of extinction

Shock in a Bangladeshi city: a hundred people celebrated the killing of a leopard cat, mistaken for a tiger

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

After brutally killing a specimen of leopard cat, they organized a festive procession as if it were an event to be celebrated: the shocking episode happened a few days ago in the city of Habiganj, in the Chunarughat district of Bangladesh. A cruel and doubly serious fact, given that it is one feline breed in danger of extinction and protected for years by the law of the country. A correspondent for the British newspaper The Daily Star denounced the vile act to the Forestry Department.

Thanks to the report, the authorities were able to identify two perpetrators, but about a hundred people not yet identified took part in the party for the killing of the poor animal, mistaken for a tiger.

As told by a forest official, the feline was first trapped with a net at a potato farm in the village of Kachua. Shortly afterwards, several inhabitants of the surrounding areas arrived and started screaming “tiger, tiger, tiger”, beating the animal to death.

The villagers then organized a procession during which they carried around the body of the cat and then moved around Kachua and the neighboring village, before leaving it near a cemetery "added the astonished official - My office is located about 20 km from the area. When I went there after being contacted, the cat was already dead.

Several citizens have wanted to distance themselves from the horrible crime.

I heard that the locals panicked over having a 'tiger' on the plantation - commented Abdul Mia - I was very skeptical about it and told many villagers that it was a tiger. However, they beat the cat to death. It's not fair, ”said Abdul Mia, a resident of the village.

A species protected by law in Bangladesh and which is in danger of disappearing

The leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) is a small wild feline that lives in the forests of Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Its name derives from the spots similar to those of the leopard. But it actually belongs to the Panthera genus. This species falls under those at risk of extinction, included in the red list of the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) and in Bangladesh it is protected by the Wildlife Conservation and Security Act 2012.

We wish adequate punishment for anyone who has had the indecency to trap and kill a specimen of this fascinating endangered species!
