Since yesterday, Wednesday 5 January 2022, in Spain there are new laws that consider everyone animals sentient beings. A great victory that animal rights associations and citizens have been waiting for for some time and that has had a difficult life since 2017, the year in which the modification was proposed.
The decree making changes to the Civil Code, the Mortgage Law and the Civil Procedure recognizes officially animals as beings endowed with sensitivity, able to feel pain e no longer as objects.

The reform is a very first step forward for a country that maintains the bloody tradition of bullfighting and that legally kills dogs and cats in shelters that cannot find adoption. The protests were certainly not lacking, but animal rights activists and veterinarians hope that through this first bill these barbaric acts can soon be prohibited.
