Historic ruling for the M57 bear! The Council of State is in favor of his release

New hope for the M57 bear, locked up at the Casteller in Trento. The Council of State has ruled in favor of his release

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Hopes are rekindled for the bear M57, for over a year detained at Casteller di Trento. The Council of State has just expressed itself, with a sentence asking to evaluate the release of the animal. And not only that, he recognizes that life imprisonment for wild animals is not the right way to go.

Through the very important ruling, the Council of State agreed with the National Animal Protection Body (Enpa) and the International Animal Protection Organization (Oipa), which have long been fighting for the freedom of the Trentino bears.

The Province of Trento, having previously consulted Ispra, in carrying out this sentence will therefore have to assess whether the current conditions of the M57 model have exacerbated its aggressiveness to the point of suggesting the adoption of measures other than its release. - the text of the judicial provision reads - In particular, with a view to the protection of public safety inspired by the principle of proportionality and the protection of the conditions of the animal as guaranteed by primary sources (also of community rank), the Administration, with the aforementioned preliminary investigation, in the execution of this sentence it will have to assess whether - having regard to the ascertained conditions, and where it exists at the real level of danger of the specimen - the release with a radio collar is practicable, or the similar solution to that previously adopted for the DJ3 sample (which is accounted for by the same Province appealed on page 12 of the reply, declaring not to oppose it) ".

The sad fate of the Trentino bears

As is sadly known, the Province of Trento has proved incapable of promoting peaceful coexistence between bears and citizens and in most cases has preferred to keep the bears prisoner. Not only the M57 bear (three and a half year old specimen, "accused" of attacking a young carabiniere) is locked up at the Centro Casteller in Trento, but also M49, better known by the name Butterfly. A few months ago the Antispecista Assembly collective released distressing images showing the living conditions of the bears inside the fortress. Often and willingly they are sedated and abused. As if living in small cages of concrete and steel wasn't enough.

But things could change, at least for the M57 bear thanks to the position taken by the State Council. According to ENPA and Oipa, the one just issued represents one "Historical sentence of the highest profile, which finally enters into the merits by thoroughly investigating an event so far dealt with in a hasty and superficial way. "

Soon the release of M57 could become a reality, but this must be done with respect for the safety of the bear. For this reason, the LAV (Anti-Vivisection League) has asked for a specific program to be urgently prepared that includes a sort of re-education to the wildness of the animal, as happens in Canada for those bears that show an attitude that is too confident.
