Every summer, around 800 pilot whales, but also some dolphins, are killed for their meat in the Faroe Islands, a Danish archipelago located between Norway and Iceland. Meat and fat are used to feed the population but it certainly is not hunger that gives rise to this havoc. It is a real tradition, awaited by the inhabitants.
Sea Shepherd witnessed the slaughter just last week, photographing what happened on the beaches of Vagar Island photographs show dozens of pilot whales arranged after a successful hunt in the Faroe Islands
The association has long been fighting against this practice, but the Faroese government says that hunting is completely sustainable, a real business of state in the entire community is involved in the guidance and slaughter of marine animals.
These images show dozens of animal carcasses laid out on the quay in Jatnavegur on Vagar Island on Wednesday, some marked with numbers.
“The level of excitement among the locals was noticeable. Small children ran playing while their parents chatted and laughed, which seemed to be in total contradiction to the events that were about to unfold. As soon as a pilot whale was pulled out of the water in front of me by several men aged 15 to 40, the screams exploded " said Sea Shepherd. "The sound of fear and panic was clear to everyone, but it fell into the void of the participants who continued to laugh and appreciate the brutality."
