Yesterday Sabrina, the elephant from the Naples zoo is dead after decades of imprisonment, confined in a space totally devoid of vegetation and with a small marsh. She was born in 1958 and arrived in the structure in 1986, she left us at the age of 56. But his was never real life.

Sabrina she lived alone, although it is well known that elephants are social animals. It never had the opportunity to shelter itself from the eyes of visitors, from which a kind of fence made of sharp points separated it. Indeed, it has been documented more times than during the day she was denied access to the small shelter, so that it could always be exposed to the public, in perennial violation of the law in force.

A serious fact, which LAV has been denouncing for years, is that the Zoo, despite the attempt to clean up and relaunch in recent months, it is not yet a zoo authorized by the Ministry of the Environment and which, therefore, operates outside the law in force.

The association has now asked the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office to arrange for an independent autopsy who ascertains the causes and possible responsibilities of death, to know which therapies she was subjected to and which veterinarians were involved, in order to verify that everything possible was done to save her, but above all to verify if the death depended on the conditions in which she was detained.

The animal had given symptoms of severe discomfort which led to the intervention of the doctors of the Veterinary Department. But there was nothing to be done.

“This news has affected us deeply. We have asked for an independent autopsy to ascertain the causes of death and, as and more than before, we want justice and the closure of the Naples zoo. We are waiting for you all November 30 to make our voices heard to the cry of #fuorituttidallozoo “, concludes Lav.

Because, we add, structures like zoos should never exist again.
