It had been abandoned inside one box di cardboard at the mercy of his fate. A cub of orangutan was found in Borneo western from the team of International Animal Rescue. His arms crossed over his chest, dark skin and lack of hair on his head. The baby looked dead, mummified in his cardboard coffin. But gito, so he was renamed, he was alive.

Closed in the box, left to die in the sun, Gito had been bought for approx 20 pounds by the village leader of Caring in western Borneo. The man probably killed his mother to steal and sell her baby. The poor orangutan was kept as a pet by the village chief but the treatment he was given was certainly not the best.

A soup box of his own urine. The only nourishment, XNUMX cups milk condensed. For this reason the little one, when he was found, was gravely dehydrated e malnourished.

Gito was in such urgent need of medical attention that the local Forestry Corps (BKSDA) allowed the rescue team to rush to the clinic without waiting for the BKSDA official to arrive.

The orangutan, who must have a great desire to live, managed to make it after 9 long hours of travel. Tests revealed that he had sarcoptic mange, a highly contagious skin disease that causes itching and irritation.

Alan Knight, general manager of International Animal Rescue, has explained:

“It's hard to digest Gito's shocking state when we rescued him. Our team has seen a significant increase in the number of baby orangutans being kept as pets and only a few of them have only recently been returned to their natural environment. This is the result of the forest fires ravaging Indonesia leaving wild orangutans without food and shelter. Those who are saved from the flames remain exposed and vulnerable, threatened by hunger and men ”.

Now Gito is being treated at the Ketapang center but other children like him need help.

"These defenseless animals can and will be saved but we urgently need more funding for our work" is the appeal launched by International Animal Rescue.
