Giant panda: even for China it is no longer at risk of extinction (but remains a vulnerable species)

Good news for the giant panda, which was still considered endangered in China. However, local authorities have established that, given the increase in the panda population in the wild, the species can become "vulnerable".

There is still work to be done to ensure that the giant panda has a long and safe life on the planet but currently, with 1800 specimens living free in nature, it is no longer in danger of disappearing.

In reality, the Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) had already removed the panda from the list of endangered species in 2016, but China did not agree and had contested the decision, believing that this "easing" would have could have led one to believe, erroneously, that the plans for the defense of the species could also be softened.

But now the Chinese authorities have also announced that the giant panda is no longer at risk of extinction but is still a vulnerable species.

The WWF immediately reported the news, whose symbol is the panda.

According to a press conference by Cui Shuhong, an official of the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and the Environment, the increase in the panda population is due to the fact that a lot of work has been done in the country on natural reserves, in order to protect vast areas of natural ecosystems, which has also led to the resurgence of other threatened species such as Siberian tigers, Asian elephants and ibises.

As for the panda, the excellent result was achieved thanks to the repopulation of the bamboo forests, a fundamental food of this animal's diet, and more generally to the increase in natural reserves that have allowed the specimens to move, feed and reproduce safely.
