A really sad end that happened to a flamingo inside the Miller Park Zoo, in the state of Illinois.

A child, visiting the zoo on Monday 20 May 2019, threw a stone at the animal, injuring it in the legs and causing it to fall. For the flamingo there was nothing more to be done and the choice of the manager of the zoo and the veterinarians who visited it was its killing by euthanasia.

The sad news comes from Jay Tetzloff, director of the park and of leisure and cultural activities at Miller Park Zoo, interviewed after the incident said:

“An underage guest accidentally injured a flamingo on Monday by throwing a stone at it. Unfortunately, the staff determined that the only way to act because of the animal's injuries was euthanasia. "

After the story, the zoo talked to the student's family with the hope of starting a path of growth and empowerment of the boy but no declaration was made on the safety status of the animals and their habitat.

The pink flamingo exhibit at Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington opened in 2016 and promoted as one of the largest flamingo exhibits ever.

According to the University of Michigan, the largest flamingos are found in the Middle East in countries such as Iran, Turkey, and Afghanistan, as well as areas in West Africa, South America, and throughout Europe. They are often hunted throughout the Middle East and Africa, and their eggs are often caught for profit.

They can live up to an average of 30 years, according to the university, with those in captivity sometimes reaching 60.
