The balance of 2019 is tremendous. 480 cetaceans have been killed since the beginning of the year as revealed via Twitter Blue Planet Society.

Just last week, the first day of hunting were 150 pilot whales and a series of dolphins killed. They had been sighted south of the capital Tórshavn, on the island of Streymoy. After a chase, the poor animals were forced to beach in Sandágerði, where they met a terrible death with hooks and knives.

This time it happened instead to Fuglafjörður, a small town of 1.500 inhabitants located on the island of Eysturoy.

Pilot whales were spotted from a distance and according to the classic Grindadráp ritual they were surrounded by a series of boats, startled and then pushed to shore.

The petition

Although the inhabitants of the Faroe Islands seem deaf to international calls and so far they have stopped at nothing, the Blue Planet Society has launched a petition calling for a stop to whale hunting around the world.

“More than 100.000 dolphins and small whales are hunted and killed every year. Most of the hunts are not regulated, they are illegal and unsustainable with unknown impacts on the populations ”, the text reads.
