He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

It is a real rarity. A purebred Alpine Dingo puppy was discovered in Australia, Victoria. A real chimera. In fact, if the dingoes are quite widespread in those parts, the alpine ones are really difficult to identify. The little one, about 5-6 weeks old, had been abandoned.

Taking care of him was the Australian Dingo Foundation (ADF) which renamed him “Sooty”, due to the color (ash) of his coat and to remember the forest fires that devastated parts of Victoria. The animal was rushed to the Foundation for treatment. There, DNA testing revealed that it was a rare purebred alpine dingo, an endangered species in the area. According to the ADF, finding a purebred Alpine dingo is an "absolute miracle".

"It shows no evidence of ancestry from domestic dogs and is further evidence that wild dingoes still live in Victoria," said Dr. Cairns.

Sanctuary supervisor Kevin Newman couldn't believe his eyes when DNA tests confirmed he was a thoroughbred.

Dingoes are fundamental animals in the local ecosystem as they are predators at the apex of the food chain, useful for keeping the populations of small marsupials and above all that of rabbits, very widespread in the area, under control. However, the place where Sooty was found is an active hotspot for hunters who enjoy catching and killing dingoes around here.

The dingo (Canis lupus dingo) is a mammal of the canid family, which lives mainly in Australia but also in Thailand, in the south-east of China, in Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Borneo, in the Philippines, New Guinea, and India.

This animal is protected only in parks and nature reserves. While it is not at risk of extinction, it is classified as vulnerable by the IUCN. Their main problem concerns the hybridization with the domestic dog for this reason we are trying to protect them in order to keep the breed as pure as possible.
