Everyone is crazy about homeless animals: dogs and cats are not bought, they are adopted

Adopting pets is the best thing you can do. Many of you already know this, but now the confirmation comes from a new report from PetSmart Charities. The report notes that 66 percent of people thinking of getting a new pet into their home would adopt it in a shelter rather than go to a breeder or shop.

Adopting pets is the best thing you can do. Many of you already know this, but now the confirmation comes from a new one PetSmart Charities report. The report notes that 66 per cent of people who plan to get a new pet at home would adopt it in a shelter, instead of going to a breeder or a shop.

A much higher percentage than 58 percent in 2011. Also spaying and neutering are on the rise, luckily: as many as 86% of pets are spayed or neutered, 6 percentage points more than in 2009.

Reading these figures it is easy to deduce that there is greater accountability of pet owners. But is it really so? In fact, there are still many things to improve. For example, 28 percent of dog owners said they bought their newest furry newcomer instead of adopting.

The most common reason is the belief that purebred animals are not available for adoption, which demonstrates a lack of awareness of specific groups for breed dogs to be adopted, as well as many shelter sites that allow potential adopters to search by breed.

Respondents also reported finding the adoption process "too difficult". This perception could change with so-called "open adoptions", focusing more on correspondence between families and pets, rather than rigid barriers and processes.

Finally, it is less clear how to overcome the obvious polarization that exists between cats and dogs. In fact, 27% of respondents said they do not plan to bring a cat home. But cats too need loving daughters and safe shelter.

In any case, never forget that animals are not bought, they are not things. Animals adopt themselves.
