The Saint Louis Zoo works for the conservation of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) through a breeding program responsible for maintaining a genetically healthy population of this species.
The Asian elephant population now numbers less than 35 in the wild. This species is in fact increasingly threatened by habitat destruction and by poachers in search of precious ivory. In this context, Avi's death is truly terrible news.
