On the beach of San Vito Lo Capo, in Sicily, a turtle of the Caretta caretta species was sighted for the second time. In reality it is not known whether it is one or two specimens but, regardless of this, everyone's collaboration is requested so that the protected turtles can go to lay their eggs, without being disturbed in any way.
To warn of the double sighting was the mayor of San Vito Lo Capo, Giuseppe Peraino, that after learning of the protected sea turtle immediately issued a statement to the population to warn of the presence of one or more Caretta caretta, inviting everyone to leave the animals alone so that they can lay their eggs.
The reconstruction of the facts is as follows: last night on the beach a Caretta caretta was spotted about to lay its eggs. However, there was a problem, it seems that a large piece of wood on the shoreline has discouraged her and made her return to the sea. This was already the second sighting in 48 hours.
Now the area has been demarcated so that no one can access it. But the mayor also launched a real appeal to citizens and tourists to pay maximum attention:
"Anyone who spots the turtle on the beach is sent to immediately call the Coast Guard, the WWF or the Municipality of San Vito Lo Capo in order to protect the animal, without approaching, without taking videos or photos, so that it can lay its eggs with serenity".
It seems incredible to have to make such an appeal, since it should be taken for granted that turtles, like any other animal, should never be disturbed, much less when they have to lay their eggs. Yet it is necessary, you may remember an episode that took place last year in which a turtle was unable to lay its eggs as it was disturbed by bathers.
