The British government is working on a new law that introduces a new crime concerning the theft of animals. The latter are currently classified as property, like a mobile phone or a bicycle, pursuant to Theft Act 1968. And over the past five years, particularly during the lockdown, the number of pet thefts in Britain has increased dramatically. The criminals steal them (favoring those of expensive races) both to resell them at inflated prices and to breed them.
Even today, in fact, criminals see dog theft as a low-risk and high-yield crime, which is why in the country a group of animal welfare associations and government officials have set up a task force on pet theft in order to to recognize this serious crime which, according to government sources, will provide for up to 5 years in prison for anyone who steals a dog or other pet. In recent years, only 1% of dog theft cases have led to legal proceedings and usually you never go beyond a small fine or probation. But with the new law, which could come into effect shortly, the situation will change dramatically.
