In just one day, they will be up to 2.000 dogs slaughtered. All in the name of profit. -There are only 5 days left to stop the festival of the carbe du cabe di Yulin, in China, which has seen the theft and culling of around 50.000 dogs since it was started.
From one Animal Asia survey it emerged that most of the dogs that end up on Chinese tables are pets, once house guardians, torn from the love of their families. This happens due to the presence of violent gangs of dog thieves.
It is a extensive crime network, although some locations are beyond the control of these criminals, especially in rural areas of China. In the Spring of 2013, Animals Asia studied how dogs live in the countryside of the largest Chinese cities and what terrible risks they face. 1.468 responses from 771 inhabitants in 28 provinces, autonomous prefectures and municipalities were collected and analyzed. From these data, CNN has drawn some interesting infographics:
Surprisingly, 70% of the inhabitants interviewed said they had mysteriously lost a dog; in 75.9% of the cases they assumed it was a theft by dog hunters. In support of this idea, we can say that the theft of these specimens, in 73.6% of cases, took place in the Winter - precisely in conjunction with the traditional Yulin festival, i.e. when the demand is extremely high.
For this reason, Animal Asia launched the #ItsNoFestival campaign, to which over 70.000 people joined in just one week, who signed the open letter to Chinese dog meat traffickers, urging them not to participate and to put an end to the demonstration and this cruel industry.
The surveys also revealed that only a minority of the population consumes dog meat, while in some areas 65% of people share the absolute ban on slaughtering dogs for human consumption. In 2014, the Yulin Festival saw the number of slaughtered dogs drop by up to 80% compared to previous years. It's a small victory, but we will only be truly happy when no animal is cruelly sacrificed. Let's hope it happens this year, let's say stop at the Dog Meat Festival.
