Not long ago we gave you news of the strange deaths of mallards and ducks in the Basiglio lake, in the Milanese area. Now the results of the autopsies carried out on the animals have finally arrived and the hypothesis initially formulated has been confirmed: the massacre, still ongoing, is caused by the presence of botulinum.

It would be there toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum to have caused a real intoxication which has caused the death of many animals and which continues to put their health at risk. In fact, the phenomenon has not yet stopped and, in addition to new deaths recorded these days, there are also some ducks still alive that show signs of the presence of botulinum intoxication, in particular nervous pathologies. Among other things came the news that a moorhen was also found dead, the risk that the situation could worsen and threaten other species is therefore more concrete.

The response came from the Ats (ex Asl) of the Metropolitan City of Milan. It is not clear, however, whether the bacterium developed directly in the lake or if some ducks brought it from other waterways. We remember in fact that Botox manages to proliferate especially in stagnant watersi.

A situation which, as pointed out by environmentalists, if not contained as soon as possible risks becoming dangerous for human beings as well. As Stefano Apuzzo and Edgard Mayer of Friends of the Land Lombardia and Gaia Animals & Environment Onlus:

"Botox is likely to spread to many other animals and to the whole South Milan Agricultural Park. Furthermore, with the opening of the hunting season in September, the Botox risks spreading to human beings. All this in the Augustan and holiday disinterest of the institutions that would be in charge of the controls and containment of the epidemic ".

Death of mallards and ducks in Basiglio: the presence of botulinum confirmed

The propposed by environmentalists is therefore that of postpone the opening of the hunting season at least in the areas affected by the phenomenon, the South Milan Park but it would be better in the whole Milanese Plain Hunting Territorial Area. However, there is no confidence that the proposal can be accepted by the institutions, the associations show themselves in this sense ready to denounce those who are responsible for facilitating the spread of the epidemic.

In the immediate future, however, to prevent the infection from spreading, it is necessary to remove all carcasses of dead animals, in this way we should at least avoid the risk that other specimens eat the remains contaminated by the toxin. It will be the municipality to bear the costs to reclaim the area.
