How far do we really know the behavior of animals? We have learned something about the habits of domestic animals, but we know very little about the wild ones, which live far away from us. Often several interesting discoveries in this regard come thanks to the work of Photography.
Marc Mol in 2011 jumped at the opportunity to photograph an epic battle, to say the least, during a trip to Zambia, at South Lungawa National Park. The photographer was aboard a small plane early in the morning when his co-pilot saw more than 140 crocodiles pounce on a dead hippo.
The herd to which the poor hippo belonged quickly fled, while the hungry reptiles rushed to their prey. The images make up the reportage of a fight which appears brutal to us, but which is perfectly normal and necessary in the animal kingdom. In nature there is the law of the strongest and it is the hippos who pay the price in front of the crocodiles.
The photos were shot in 2011 by Marc Moll, but they were only posted on the internet a few days ago. They are the testimony of the behavior of crocodiles towards their prey and of the sudden flight of hippos in the face of danger.
We see the hippos move away, after some hesitation, from their mate lifeless, while the crocodiles approach inexorably. The hippo would be died from a bacterial infection and not because of the direct attack of the crocodiles.
The photographer described his experience as unforgettable and extraordinary, despite the extreme harshness of the images, which were taken along the Luangwa River.
