Canada will open the world's first sanctuary for whales and dolphins rescued from water parks

Canada will open the world's first sanctuary for whales and dolphins rescued from water parks

The Whale Sanctuary Project will be completed in Canada by 2023, a sanctuary that will host dolphins and whales that lived in captivity

In Nova Scotia (Canada) the Whale Sanctuary Project, a huge sanctuary that will house whales and dolphins that have lived in captivity for years. This is the first structure of this type, where finally the cetaceans rescued from water parks they will be able to lead a dignified existence. The project was born following the approval of the Canadian law - dating back to 2019 - which prohibits the keeping in captivity of dolphins, whales and seals.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to release specimens that have spent years (in some cases decades!) In a confined environment in full freedom. For this reason, a team of Canadian researchers and conservationists has decided to create a safe space as close as possible to the natural habitat of dolphins and whales. 484 thousand square meters dedicated to whales and dolphins.

The sanctuary, which will have an extension of over 480 thousand square meters and is designed to accommodate up to 8 Beluga (better known as "white whales") will rise south of Port Hilford, in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The goal is to welcome the first cetaceans as early as 2023, if the managers manage to obtain all the required permits.

“The creation of this sanctuary is the first step towards a world in which all cetaceans are treated with respect and are no longer confined to the concrete tanks of amusement parks and aquariums,” explains the team that is carrying out the project.

We hope that one day there will no longer be a need to build sanctuaries like this and that all cetaceans (and not only) in the world will be left alone in their habitats as it should be!
