They have been spotted in several cities in China, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wenzhou, Shaoxing, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Jiujiang, and Hefei. They are used by beggars to pity (and thus earn money) in the eyes of passers-by.
And, unfortunately, apparently the trick has worked so far: those who exploit camels to give alms are more and more, like explain the Chinese newspapers. The latest case was discovered in the city of Fuzhou, Fujian province, where two men in tattered clothes were spotted begging, holding the reins of a mutilated camel in their hands.
When the police approached them, in fact, they found that the animal had no hooves and the wounds indicated that they had been deliberately cut by unscrupulous men. Once questioned, they claimed that it was an accident: the animal would have lost its hooves in the impact with a train and, since they had no money, they had to resort to alms to care for the dismembered animal. It is difficult to prove that the story is true or not.
It is easy, however, to believe that it is only one ploy to scrape together some money from people shocked by what they see, even if, in fact, this further feeds this criminal racket that tortures animals. And all the police can do is a fine for begging, but nothing else. Because there is a lack of laws that protect the rights of animals.
