In Indonesia there is a sanctuary, the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary, which deals with a species that is about to disappear forever from the face of the planet: the Dicerorhinus sumatrensis, the Sumatran rhino, one of the five species of rhinoceros existing in the world and also one of the most threatened by extinction after deforestation and wild poaching have decimated their populations.

In the Indonesian sanctuary, which is based in the Way Kambas National Park, these days, however, is a celebration because a female Sumatran rhino was born. The event was welcomed with great joy by all the employees of the structure and by the volunteers of the association who, with the government subsidies, carry out the program for the protection of this species which unfortunately is on the verge of disappearance.

Born on Thursday 24 March, the little girl is now one week old and takes her first steps next to her mother Rosa who was brought to the sanctuary in 2004. The baby is her first puppy.

With fewer than 80 remaining around the globe, the Sumatran rhino is in one highly critical state of conservation with the last couple free in nature, who died in Malaysia in 2019. The birth of a specimen represents a huge glimmer of light in the tunnel.

We've been holding our breaths ever since we found out that Rosa was pregnant. Rhino pregnancies aren't easy, so it's wonderful to be able to celebrate this birth and to know that there is another Sumatran rhino in the world. However, the fact that we are so excited about the birth of a rhino highlights that these beautiful animals are still on the verge of extinction. But today's news brings us hope for their future "

said Cathy Dean, CEO of Save the Rhino International, the association that manages the sanctuary and its wonderful guests. It is in fact the third cub born in the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary.
