The presence of the wolf in the Euganean Hills Regional Park is documented for the first time. The traps sown by the Forestry Carabinieri of the Montegrotto Terme station were photographed and filmed.

For a few months, since a dog had been attacked in Baone, the presence of the wolf in the Euganean Hills was suspected but now the definitive proof has arrived: a video that takes it back, which was shared by the Facebook page of the Regional Park of the Hills. Euganei.

The sighting and filming were possible thanks to the strategic positioning of camera traps scattered throughout the park by the Forestry Police, in coordination with the technical staff of the Euganean Hills Regional Park.

Thus the presence of the canid was discovered and, after carefully analyzing the videos, the experts confirmed that it is a wolf and specifically a female specimen, probably present in the park since last October.

In the press release relating to the discovery of the wolf, the Euganean Hills Regional Park writes:

“Based on the knowledge about the species, we can definitely say that it is a dispersed specimen, which is that particular moment in the life of wolves in which the young leave forever the territorial pack in which they were born, looking for a new territory to be occupied permanently and in which to eventually form a new herd. The displacement of wolves in dispersion can cover even thousands of kilometers through environments totally unsuitable for the species. Therefore, although the closest herds are those of the Veneto foothills and the Dolomites, we cannot exclude that the specimen may come from far more distant populations, such as the Apennine or Balkan ones, and only genetic analyzes will be able to clarify this point ".

Therefore, searches for samples and analyzes continue to try to understand where exactly the wolf comes from, if it is alone and also to monitor its presence inside the Park.

However, its arrival in the Euganean Hills area is not too surprising, considering that the wolf populations are in a moment of great territorial expansion and that this area is a perfect habitat for their needs. The Park is keen to underline that: "The presence of the wolf in the Park territory should not cause any concern, the animal is not dangerous to humans, but certainly some precautionary measures must be taken to protect our pets and livestock. Definitely avoid letting your animal friends go free in the evening and at night, and for those who have grazing sheep, donkeys and horses, in the evening they must return them to permanent shelters and stables ". And also remember that the wolf: “represents an enrichment factor of biodiversity and can represent a important natural element of balance to keep wildlife in check, especially the wild boar, which for some time has represented a danger to motorists and causes considerable damage to agricultural production ".
