Experts have identified a new species of frog named after the very young activist Greta Thunberg

In Panama in the cloud forests of the Cerro Chucantí nature reserve surrounded by mountains, a team of international researchers identified a new species of frog which was given the name of Pristimantis gretathunbergae, in honor of the now most famous Swede of the moment, climate activist Greta Thunberg.

It is a frog of the genus Pristimantis, a very vast genus that has more than 550 species that mostly populate Colombia, Ecuador and Peru and that differ in color and morphology. Of these 13 were those known in Panama so far.

The Pristimantis gretathunbergae is in fact one endemic to Panama which inhabits the evergreen humid forests and the eastern and central mountains at altitudes between 700 and 1400 meters, but it is possible to find this specimen also towards the border with Colombia.

This amphibian is larger than the other Pristimantis species and has a very dark iris that tends to black. It prefers moss and tropical bromeliad plants and it is among its leaves that it shelters in the night. A fascinating discovery that worries ethologists, as the areas where it lives are at high risk of deforestation.
