At the Big Cat Sanctuary, a female jaguar gave birth to an adorable puppy with a totally black coat, suffering from melanism
Adorable and very black: a few days ago a jaguar named Keira gave birth to a puppy with a rather rare characteristic, that is the completely black coat instead of the spotted fur. Too bad, however, that the surprising event did not take place in nature, but in the United Kingdom, at the Big Cat Sanctuary, a facility in Kent where large cats at risk of extinction are bred. It is a beautiful girl whose images have traveled the world.

But why the black cloak? This rare condition is called melanism and is due to an excess of black pigmentation caused by a mutation in a dominant gene.
Melanism can affect not only large cats such as jaguars and leopards, but also birds and other species. The little girl born a few weeks at the Big Cat Sanctuary enjoys excellent health and spends her days playing and eating in the company of her mother Keira. Never would we have preferred to see her run free in the Amazonian forests ...
